What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing which is still widely used in many countries across the globe. It originated in China and has its roots in Taoist Philosophy. The overall aim of acupuncture is to restore the body's equilibrium. What makes this system so uniquely suited to modern life is that physical, emotional and mental are seen as interdependent as the body, mind and emotions are seen as one in Oriental medicine

The body is under a constant state of flux, ebbing and flowing through life. At times humans can be affected by a range of different factors that distrub the normal regulation of life such as stress, trauma, overworking, physical aliments, poor diets and emotional issues. Acupuncture treatment works to restore the natural balance between the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the whole person, resutling in a truly holistic therapy.

By inserting fine needles into specific acupuncture points on the body, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and allow it to restore its own natural equilibrium. The points that are chosen are relevant to the indivdual's unique circumstance as the diagnosis varies from person to person. Once balance is restored, acupuncture is great at maintaining it as it is in essence a preventative medicine. Restoring healthy mechanisms allows the checks and balances of the body to function strongly thus maintaining overall health and well-being.
